Snails in organic garden

by tealady @ 10 Dec. 2007 - 11:28:53 am

Last summer snails discovered my vege/herb garden.. probably the basil I bought in soil?. They ate all the basil..even the roots it seems!, the curly parsley, and the oregano.. the capsicums and leaves of the capsicum plant , and had a go at the tomatoes.
Then ate the sweet pea seedlings and pea/bean seedlings when a couple of inches high during the year too..soo..
I've just built this snail trap.

I know there are lots after rain in evening and especially in morning, but just squishing them is not working.
Having first seen lots of huge snails and slugs in England when I vested there in 2004.. really big ones.. I figured maybe the English would have figured out how to get rid of them in a organic vegetable/herb garden.

I also came across this copper tape

and these collars

The copper tape looks interesting.

I admit my first huge snail I'd seen in my life was crossing a footpath in a shopping centre in England, so I stopped and watched it ..then someone came up behind and told me I didn't have to wait for the snail to cross the footpath :).. and that most people would just step on it:)
I was wondering if this was the type people ate in France, and if anyone did in England too?

I also found this real jet black slug I saw near a waterfall really different.. it was shiny , black and huge

Has anyone any good ideas that works?

Hi you can eat the snails in your garden if you clean them properly. I dont quite know how you do that as I cant bring myself to eat them.
There are many different types of slugs of varying shades from black to white to orange.
They are a problem and last year despite were worse than usual.

Thanks Pam, how do I find his blog?
I built one of the snail traps mentioned in my post and put lettuce leaves in the bottom and rotten strawberries in the top.. only the snails ate the lettuce and crawled away.. I guess they dont really want to hang around on bare plastic when there are other smells in the garden..or maybe they dont like rotting strawberry smells:-)

I've never seen any slugs as yet over here in Austrlia, just that one huge shiny jet black one in Wales it was.. near English border.
I can see from the size it was why they would be a problem though.

Our snails are way smaller the the one I saw in England too, but they still manage to eat everything in their path that they like.
